Ahhh Zombies !
Lately it seems pop culture has been fascinated with the concept of the Walking Dead and the Zombie Apocalypse. I have noticed everything from video games,TV shows, to blockbuster movies running with the concept of lifeless flesh eating monsters taking over our society. I shiver at the thought of friends and family actually eating each other, but it makes you wonder ; where did all this originate from ?
Although the native americans spoke on something similar to the zombie epidemic (Wendigo) the zombie concept actually originated from West Africa. It is said that the Bokor (voodoo priest) creates the zombie by stealing the astral body of the victim which they bottle and sell to business men for good luck (a practice commonly done in Thailand by the buddhist who practice the black tantra). The end result of a human without an astral body is a life with no will on its own being controlled by the castor of the art. I know its hard to wrap your head around the concept of someone stealing your soul, but I have found another theory on how this technique works : medicine !
What is more, if science ever gets to the bottom of Voodoo in Haiti and Africa, it will be found that some important medical secrets, still unknown to medical science, give it its power, rather than gestures of ceremony. -- Zora Neale Hurston
"through the use of medicine and a combination of various poisons, the Haitians who have dabbled in the creation of zombies have mastered the technique."
Wade Davis a Harvard ethnobotanist and author of "The Serpent and the Rainbow" states that a poison used to put the victim in a dream like state with the added effect of a ceremonial burial and "resurrection" is what causes one to believe their a zombie. They are basically tricked into thinking they are one (imagine waking up intoxicated inside a grave. Yeah you would bug out as well lol)
Although plenty have dismissed Wade Davis claims as total bullshxt here is my take on the whole zombie thing. Is it possible ? Maybe. Biological warfare is an age old practice, but I think its deeper than that. Like the tale of the Wendigo I believe the Zombie epidemic is about our society as a whole. We are taking the term "consumer" to unprecedented levels ; we eat and eat and eat all of our natural resources until there will be nothing left but ourselves. Now at that point....who's to say we won't start eating each other ?
