Fck a Grammy.
When you think of the Grammy's you think of the world's best under one roof projecting their greatness onto us via a television broadcast. You think red carpets, fancy dresses, horrible dresses, paparazzi, a torrent of tweets circulating twitter & last but not least hurricane Kanye storming the stage protesting on behalf of we under appreciated creatives. Are the Grammy's all what its cracked up to be ? Does an award from them or even a nominee validate ones career ? Will rap ever get its 40 acres & a mule after being treated like the stepchild after all these years ? Will Iggy Azalea stop rapping ? Find out on the next episode of DRAGON BALL Z !
Seriously though Kanye brings major issues to light. Yes he will run up on you like Omar from HBO's "The Wire" robbing you of your shine. Yes he will embarrass you as you cherish that award because he felt that Beyoncé should’ve won it. He's our boy ; Kanye is our Robin Hood fighting the industry on behalf of the creatives. As I briefly mentioned he does bring up issues that need to be addressed such as the Grammy's clear bias against black people. It used to be thought that they didn't acknowledge rap as a genre but that proved to be wrong with the current influx ofwhite rappers. Many a time the logic pouring from Kanye's unshackled mind and out of his ridiculously razor sharp tongue is dismissed as a rant but if you listen closely you will see the bigger picture. The Grammy's are biased as fck. The industry is biased as fck. Many have stepped forward to address this issue but Hurricane Ye' would put that ass on fire right there on Live TV for People magazine & TMZ to dissect the madness for our viewing pleasure. A great question to ask now is if the Grammy's actually is biased then who do they favor ? Is it based on talent ? Popularity ? Race maybe ? What are the guidelines ? Hell are they even listening to the same shit we are listening to ? These may be questions we will never get an answer to or at least an answer we are satisfied with. The question we should be asking though is : does a Grammy validate one's career as an artist ?
We all seek validation for the things we do. Some will say they only create for themselves and they can care less who likes it or not but I feel like that is just a front. When you were a kid you probably busted your ass practicing for a school play and you knew that If you were going to be the goat in baby Jesus' manger then you were going to be the best God damned goat there ever was. You put effort into this because you knew your family was coming to see you perform or if you were the athletic type they were coming to your game. Now imagine after all those drills coach had you doing & lines Ms.Blueberry had you memorize your folks just did NOT show up. Total devastation ; a straight shot to the ego. Maybe at that point you may convince yourself that you dont care but that aint the case. We create for validation the same way grandma cooks to make you feel good. We feed off of each others happiness and through a medium such as music we can make A LOT of people happy. We will be praised on music blogs from New York to Timbuktu. Now imagine the kind of push one gets when they come home with a Grammy ? To be recognized and be awarded by the committee behind the Grammy’s is a huge step in ones career but it does NOT determine whether or not your a great artist. This is the part about validation we forget as artists. Yeah you may want to be on the cover of the next COMPLEX because it will give you the juice that you need but fck COMPLEX. It’s you & your fans that validate your career, not some committee thats probably so out of touch with the culture and emotion behind the art form that they can create an algorithm or something to pick the “best” artist. Your desire, your drive to be better, to explore the depths of your emotions to create great work is what validates you. Your constant dedication to your fans is what validates you, not an award like the Grammy’s. Let your art validate you. SO does the Grammy make the artist ? OR DOES THE ARTIST MAKE THE GRAMMY !?
A Grammy would be nice though. Just saying.
