Yasiin Bey (Formerly Mos Def) Goes Under Guantánamo Bay's Standard Force Feeding "Torture"
Warning: The Video you're about to see can be viewed as disturbing, viewer discretion is advised.
Yasiin Bey, formally as Mos Def, has always been one of hiphop's more political figures. He frequently speaks out against violence and how the government handles its foreign affairs, especially dealing with terrorism and Islamic extremism. In this video, he takes his stand in a more direct manner. As you may or may not know, many inmates (the number has reached 100 out of 166 total inmates) in Guantánamo Bay, an US owned prison for terrorists and other high level inmates, have taken a hunger strike to protest the fact that Guantanamo Bay has not been closed as promised. In order to prevent them from killing themselves, these inmates are being force-fed. Yasiin Bey volunteered to go under the same process that these inmates do. As shown, it is not a pleasant experience in any form; Bey could tap out as he volunteered to do this, but most inmates are forced to undergo this for two hours, and are then kept in the same position for another two hours so that they won't throw up what has been fed to them. The question here is ethics. Medically speaking, medical intervention is not supposed to be forced upon a patient, it is up to the patient to decide to allow medical intervention. But you also have to look at it from the perspective of letting a human die. And then we have to also question the procedure itself, whether in this situation if it's saving lives or torture. As Ramadan is closing upon us, where fasting is part of a lot of these inmate's religious duty, we also have to note that in our questioning. Where do we draw the line?
